I cannot celebrate Independence Day in my motherland, Uzbekistan, until true freedom and justice are restored.
I long for a time when we can celebrate without the weight of oppression. When journalists, activists, and bloggers are no longer silenced. When opposition parties are allowed to register, and nepotism and corruption are eradicated. When our courts are truly independent and taxpayer money is spent on what really matters—not on needless festivals and forums.
It devastates me to see our people unable to unite while government bodies and monopolies grow richer, ignoring the air pollution, climate change, and poverty that plague us all. How can we enjoy life when one voice decides everything?
Today, I give thanks to God for still being alive, but I cannot stay silent. I dream of a united Uzbekistan where every voice matters, and I will continue to hope and advocate for that future.
